This Prague Jewish Quarter Tour is a three hour guided walk through the Jewish history of the city. The tour will take you for a leisurely walk through the Josefov (Joseph’s Town) district of Prague. You will see one of the few Jewish town quarters to survive the terrible Holocaust. During the 2nd World War Hitler had a gruesome scheme to preserve only the Prague Jewish cemetery and Synagogues. This as part of a future museum to mark the planned extermination of the race. Due to this evil plan you can now visit the only preserved Jewish (ghetto) in Europe. The cemetery is the oldest in Europe dating back to 1439. It is estimated about 200 000 Jewish people are buried in this small plot.
During the tour you will also see the four synagogues: Spanish, Meisel, Pinkas, Klausen, as well as the old Jewish cemetery and the ceremonial hall. The Old-New Synagogue being the oldest synagogue in central Europe. It is estimated that about 5000 Jews now live in the Czech capital city. The first Jewish community was set up in the 11th century. To finish your trip you will be shown the house on the Old Town Square where Franz Kafka was born and it is at this location the Prague Jewish Quarter Tour ends.
